Apraxia

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a disorder affecting the coordination needed to produce speech sounds. It is considered a motor speech disorder, where one has difficulty planning the motor movements for speech, and not due to oral weakness or lack of strength. If your child is experiencing the following characteristics then an evaluation may be beneficial:

  • Difficulty imitating speech and spontaneous speech is very hard to understand
  • No pattern to the speech sound errors
  • Child exhibits obvious physical struggle when trying to coordinate the mouth, lips and tongue
  • Difficulty saying longer words or phrases
  • Problems combining sounds
  • Child only has a few consonants and vowels
  • Speech sounds choppy or syllables are stressed incorrectly
