Auditory Processing

Auditory processing is the ability to appropriately process and interpret auditory information. This includes the ability to follow directions, listen in a noisy environment, appropriately develop phonological awareness skills and more!

An auditory processing disorder (APD) is not the result of a cognitive, language, or related disorder. For example, people with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism or other intellectual difficulties may present with difficulties following directions, using spoken language and developing appropriate phonemic awareness skills. It is important to understand that language processing and auditory processing are different skills though they can present as the same. It is crucial that an individual receive a thorough evaluation to determine the exact area of need and its appropriate intervention.
